How to Charge Gas in Refrigeration System?

Before charging the refrigerant, please evacuate the refrigeration system firstly. Evacuation is an essential and important process before refrigerant charging in production, installation and maintenance. Because the air contains a large amount of nitrogen, oxygen and water and so on. These gases will cause harm to the operation of our refrigeration system.

How to properly evacuate a refrigeration system? What is evacuation process?

How to Charge Gas in Refrigeration System?

R404a Refrigerant Charging Procedure:

  • After evacuating the condensing unit refrigeration system, put the refrigerant bottle upside down on the electronic scale.
  • At same time, open the high and low pressure valves of the pressure gauge to charge the refrigerant.
  • The amount of the refrigerant charge can be refer to “ Recommendation of System Refrigerant Charging Amount”
  • After Charging the Refrigerant, waiting for 15 minutes for pressure balance.

What is Important to Charge R404A Refrigerant Properly?

  • Charge the LIQUID REFRIGERANT from high pressure side after evacuation. It is forbidden to charge the liquid refrigerant from low pressure side.
  • If short of refrigerant, charge the gaseous refrigerant from low pressure side when the system is running. If the system is short of refrigerant, the temperature switch or the compressor motor thermostat will auto reset.
  • The refrigerant system must run over 1 minute after charging refrigerant 15 minutes.
  • Fill the refrigerant until no air bubbles in the sight-glass; and it should be not exceed the maximum amount. When the refrigerant charge volume is large, an receiver is required.
  • The evaporator must be in the range of MAX. Refrigerant. If R404A refrigerant charge not enough, the liquid injection will be not enough. If overcharge, the oil will be diluted, causing damage to the sliding surface and liquid compression. For proper charging, must use a sight-glass to confirm.

Recommendation of System Refrigerant Charging Amount

System refrigerant charging amount=HP of condensing unit X 1.1~1.3

For example, 3 HP condensing unit refrigerant charging amount:

3 HP X 1.1~1.3=3.3~3.9KG

The actual refrigerant charge amount can be adjusted according to installation.
