What is R290 refrigerant?

Refrigerants R290—propane is potential replacements for other refrigerants which heavily impact on the environment. It is a new environment-friendly refrigerant, which has already used in small hermetic systems such as household and commercial refrigerators and freezers, dehumidifiers, small air conditioners. It has zero ozone depletion potential ODP and minimal global warming potential GWP. Furthermore, it is petrol gases from natural sources. Propane has a large cooling capacity per unit volume and is suitable for piston compressors and small rotary compressors.

Physical performance of R290

The pressure of R 290 at -25℃ is similar to that of R22, higher than that of R134A, but lower than that of R404a. The standard boiling point of R290 is similar to that of R22, and the critical temperature is similar to that of R22, but the exhaust temperature of R290 is lower than that of R22, so the pressure of R290 is lower than that of R22, or in other words, the suction temperature of R290 can be higher, and the evaporation temperature can be lower. Under the conditions of 45℃ condensation temperature, 32℃ suction temperature and no super-cooling, the volumetric cooling capacity of R290 is similar to that of R22, which is 1.5 times of that of R134a. It is 2.5 to 3 times that of the R600A, which means that for the same cooling capacity of a household refrigerator, the R290 refrigerator has a smaller structure and takes up less space.

Safety performance of R290

The disadvantage of R290 refrigerant is the flammability of R290. The compressor, condenser, evaporator, pipeline and other components of the refrigeration system may cause the leakage, while the temperature controller, compressor relay, lighting, defrost button and other electronic components may be the ignition source. Therefore, the maximum filling amount of R290 in the refrigerator should be controlled at about 150g.
